Questions to Ask Your Addiction Recovery Center
Finding the right addiction treatment center isn’t always easy, and you shouldn’t just pick the first one you find. From a recovery’s center approach to addiction to the amenities it offers can make a difference in your treatment and your path to recovery.
To help you learn more about the facilities you’re interested in, here are some questions to ask any drug and alcohol treatment center you’re thinking of attending.
What Accreditation and Licensing Does the Center Have?
Any facility involved with addiction and mental health may have accreditation and licensing that shows it has a certain quality to its treatment. National accreditation agencies look at things like effectiveness of treatment and if the programming is research or evidence-based. Accreditation can be given by a variety of sources, but some of the most popular are the Joint Commission, the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and the All-States. Each state has its own licensing department, and ensures that the facility is meeting state regulations in treatment and care.
What Credentials and Licenses Do the Staff Have?
Asking about the credentials and qualifications of the staff gives you an idea of the level of expertise the facility offers. If every counselor has a master’s degree and is a licensed therapist, chances are counseling may be more in depth than a facility where the staff only has bachelor’s degrees. There are nationally recognized credentials that addiction professionals can test for, including certified addiction counselor (CAC) and certified co-occurring disorder professional (CCDP). These certifications show experience and expertise in recovery and addiction treatment.
What Approach Does the Center Take Towards Addiction and Recovery?
Each drug and alcohol treatment center takes a different approach towards recovery. Some are based solely on 12-step programming, while others take a spiritual approach, focusing on finding recovery through faith. Other recovery centers use an integrated model, believing that addiction does more than impact just the body. These rehabs focus on recovery from an angle that includes medical, psychological, spiritual, social, and health and wellness.
