Mental Disorders that Co-Occur with Substance Abuse

A co-occurring disorder refers to when individuals suffer from more than one medical disorder. People who have substance use disorders, as well as mental health disorders, are also diagnosed as having co-occurring disorders. This is sometimes called a dual diagnosis. Individuals with a drug addiction and a major physical health problem such as AIDS or cancer are also considered to have a co-occurring disorder.

Addiction to alcoholism, cocaïne, crystal meth, heroin, methadone, prescription medication and other drugs make the existence of a co-occurring disorder, likely. Individuals with a co-occurring disorder can have any number of mood or personality disorders, which may include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Now more than ever before, individuals from all walks of life are being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders. As more individuals with dual diagnosis appear, rehab facilities are positioning themselves to treat such cases.

We at Alpha Healing Centre, specialize in providing exceptional residential care for those suffering from and recovering from addictions as well as mental health issues. Although in the past, mental health disorders and addiction problems were often treated separately, we realize that co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders impact one another and must be treated together.

Treating just one disorder will not cause automatic recovery from the other. Even separate, parallel care for both disorders will not result in one, effective treatment plan. The ideal and effective solution to such a situation is to treat both disorders at the same time, in the same place, by the same treatment team. This is known as an integrated treatment.

Alpha Healing Center, the world-class de-addiction center offers a unique recovery experience in holistic healing and evidence-based approaches. We focus on the healing of the mind, body and spirit. Holistic healing encourages learning and utilizing stress release mechanisms, developing and pursuing creative outlets, healthy diet, exercise and spiritual growth.
