Is weed addiction real enough to seek treatment?

Most of us know that weed is widely used. What we don’t know are answers to the following questions; is weed a drug? Can it and does it cause addiction?

The answer to the first question is often found in two extremes; one is that it is definitely a dangerous drug and the other is that it is natural and if used responsibly, harmless. Most of us, however, recognize the more intermediate answer. There exists a fair amount of social stigma that demonizes those who’re addicted to weed. It exists even within the drug culture itself where many times addicts are snickered at and told to “get a real addiction.” This is a cultural misunderstanding that doesn’t consider weed a drug. Marijuana is typically smoked to produce a relaxed and euphoric effect but some choose to eat the substance for a milder, longer lasting high.

Weed addiction is quite the controversial topic. While the drug is used in some cases for medical purposes, it does not change the fact that marijuana addiction is a very real thing. Cases in which the person can simply not function without it and can’t face life sober are the very definition of addiction. Use over a long period of time is known to cause dependence, tolerance, and sometimes even addiction.

Although a one-time usage or even occasionally smoking weed recreationally will not cause addiction, long term use is known to have some addictive potential.  Trying to quit after long term use can lead to withdrawal symptoms like irritability, insomnia, poor appetite, cravings, mood swings etc. They will typically peak around the third or fourth day of quitting but will usually have stopped in a week or two. Weed addiction can also cause anxiety and depression which requires a more intensive deaddiction treatment and counselling.  It is often a result of using the drug in conjunction with other substances such as alcohol or other drugs but this may not always be the case.
